A Memorable Visit Back Home (November 20-23, 2024)

Recap video from the Paige Crozon Community Camp presented by Affinity Credit Union

I often reflect on how fortunate I am to have grown up in Humboldt and been a part of the Saskatchewan sport system. The incredible support I received from countless coaches who volunteered their time, energy, and resources to create opportunities for youth had a lasting impact on me. Whenever I get the chance to return home and work with young athletes in Saskatchewan, I’m always excited. I believe it’s powerful for youth to see and meet someone from a similar background who has pursued their dreams—it shows them what’s possible.

This past visit was particularly special.

W.P. Bate School

Poppy and I started early on Wednesday morning with a flight into Saskatchewan. As soon as we landed, we headed straight to W.P. Bate School in Saskatoon, where I ran a basketball camp and workshop for their Grade 5–7 classes. The groups were fantastic and energized and they had a staff that really cared for the students.

Naicam & St.Dominic: two Special Stops

On November 21, Poppy, my mom, and I traveled to Naicam, a small rural community that holds a special place in my heart—it’s where both of my parents grew up. I had the privilege of working with three classes, running basketball camps for Grades 4–9. We even stopped by a few classes to visit cousins, which added a personal touch to the day.

At lunch, we drove back to Humboldt, where I visited the elementary school I attended as a child. During a school assembly, I spoke to the students about my journey and the power of following your dreams. Later, I ran basketball camps for the Grade 5 and Grade 6 classes.

A Night to Remember in Saskatoon

That evening, I drove to Saskatoon to watch the Canadian Senior Men’s Basketball Team in an AmeriCup qualifier. It was an honor to be recognized at halftime alongside Michael Linklater. Canada won the game, making it an unforgettable night.

Paige Crozon Community Camp

On November 22, I hosted the Paige Crozon Community Camp, presented by Affinity Credit Union, at Merlis Belsher Place. The event sold out with 100 athletes! We partnered with Canada Basketball, who gifted all campers two tickets to their Sunday game and brought seven athletes and a coach to lead drills and inspire the participants.

The camp was supported by generous sponsors, including Affinity Credit Union, Basketball Saskatchewan Inc., McDougall Gauley LLP, Sask Lotteries, Sask Home Court, Huskie Athletics, and One Love Basketball.

In addition to basketball drills, we held a panel discussion with myself and other coaches, covering topics such as reconciliation in sport, mental wellness, the power of association, and getting recruited. It was an enriching experience for everyone involved.

During the group photo, Canada Basketball CEO Michael Bartlett surprised us with an incredible announcement: Canada Basketball and Toyota Canada had donated an additional $10,000 to the Living Skies Indigenous Basketball League. It was a touching moment and a testament to the power of community and sport.

Looking Ahead

This visit reminded me of the importance of giving back to the communities that shaped me. I’m so proud of how everything turned out and look forward to returning to Saskatchewan to continue working with young athletes. It’s a joy and a privilege to help inspire the next generation.

Paige Crozon. Olympian, mom, dreamer.

I am fortunate to live and work on the traditional territories of Treaty 6 and Treaty 7. These lands are the homeland of the Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, and Nakota Sioux, and many others who have walked this land for generations.
